Cabana Sargetia
Look, I’ve stayed at plenty of three-star places that barely deserve two stars, but Cabana Sargetia? This little gem in Costeşti actually gets it right. When I first pulled up to number 151 on the main street – and honestly, you can’t miss it since there’s basically one main road through this village – I wasn’t expecting much. But the moment I stepped inside, I knew this wasn’t your typical roadside accommodation.
The thing about staying in Hunedoara County is that you’re usually just passing through on your way to see the Corvin Castle or maybe heading deeper into the Carpathians. But Cabana Sargetia makes you want to stick around for an extra night, you know? The owners – and I’m pretty sure they live on-site – have this genuine warmth that you just don’t get at chain hotels. They know their stuff about the area too, which comes in handy when you’re trying to figure out the best route to the Sarmizegetusa ruins (spoiler: take the back roads, not the main highway). The rooms are spotless – I mean, properly clean, not just “looks clean from a distance” clean – and there’s this attention to detail that surprised me. Fresh linens that actually smell fresh, not like industrial detergent, and the kind of quiet at night that reminds you you’re in proper countryside. No highway noise, no drunk tourists stumbling around hallways at 2 AM.
What really sold me though was breakfast. I’m talking about real Romanian breakfast, not some sad continental spread with stale pastries. The kind of meal that makes you understand why that 9.7 rating isn’t just people being generous – it’s earned. And parking? Zero stress. You just pull up and you’re done, which if you’ve ever tried to navigate Romanian village streets in a rental car, you’ll appreciate. The whole setup feels like staying with family who happen to run a really good guesthouse. Would I go back? Already planning to, actually. Sometimes the best discoveries happen when you’re not trying to find them.
