You know what caught me off guard about Cabana Păstrăvului? The name literally means “Trout Cabin,” and honestly, it delivers on that promise in ways I wasn’t expecting. This place sits right on Principala Street in Izvoarele Sucevei – which, if you’ve never been to this corner of Romania, is one of those mountain villages where the air actually tastes different and you can hear the Suceava River from pretty much anywhere in town.
I mean, it’s officially a 3-star place, but that 9.5 rating isn’t just inflated reviews from relatives. The owners clearly know what they’re doing here. The cabins (there are several scattered around the property) have this rustic-but-not-trying-too-hard vibe – think solid wood construction that actually keeps you warm, not just Instagram-worthy planks. What really sold me was the morning routine: you wake up to the sound of water running somewhere nearby, and if you’re lucky enough to snag one of the riverside spots, you can literally watch trout swimming while you drink your coffee. The restaurant attached to the property serves local trout that’s so fresh it’s basically still swimming – I watched the guy pull mine from their holding tank.
The village itself is tiny, maybe 20 minutes from the bigger tourist spots around Suceava, but that’s actually perfect if you want to experience the Bucovina region without fighting crowds. There’s easy parking (which matters more than you’d think on these narrow mountain roads), and the family running the place speaks enough English to help you figure out hiking trails or where to buy supplies. Fair warning though – if you’re expecting resort-style amenities, this isn’t that. It’s more like staying at your Romanian friend’s really nice mountain house, if your friend happened to be an excellent cook and knew every fishing spot within 50 kilometers. The Wi-Fi works fine, the showers are hot, and there’s something deeply satisfying about falling asleep to the sound of actual nature instead of traffic. Plus, it’s positioned perfectly for day trips to the painted monasteries – Humor and Voroneț are both totally doable from here – but you get to come back to somewhere that feels like a retreat rather than just another tourist stop.
You'll need to let the property know in advance what time you'll arrive.
