So I stumbled across Cabana Ninel while exploring the Văliug area last summer, and honestly? It’s one of those places that immediately makes you feel like you’ve discovered something special. The moment you pull up to Nr 682 in Statiunea Crivaia, you’re hit with this incredible mountain air that’s just… different. Cleaner, somehow. The building itself has this charming traditional Romanian feel without being kitschy about it – you know what I mean? It’s authentic in a way that makes you want to slow down and actually breathe for a minute.
What really got me was how the staff seemed to genuinely care about the area, not just the hotel. The owner (I think it was Ninel herself, though I’m not entirely sure) spent like twenty minutes telling me about the best hiking trails around Crivaia and which local spots serve the most incredible ciorbă de burtă. I mean, when’s the last time hotel staff actually helped you plan adventures instead of just handing you a generic tourist brochure? The rooms are surprisingly well-appointed for what you’d expect in this part of Romania – good Wi-Fi, which is honestly a miracle given how remote it feels, and the beds are actually comfortable. No creaky springs or lumpy mattresses here. The bathroom was spotless too, and the water pressure was better than what I had at my last Bucharest hotel, if you can believe that.
The location is what really makes this place special though. You’re literally surrounded by the Carpathian foothills, and in the early morning when the mist rolls through the valley, it’s like something out of a fairy tale. But here’s the thing – it’s not touristy at all. You can walk to the thermal springs in about fifteen minutes (follow the path behind the local church, not the main road), and there’s this little family-run restaurant called Casa Veche about ten minutes away that serves the best mici I’ve had outside of my grandmother’s kitchen. Parking is easy, which is a huge relief if you’re driving up from Reșița, and the whole area stays pretty quiet even during peak season. The only minor thing I’d mention is that cell service can be spotty depending on your provider, but honestly? That might be a feature, not a bug. Sometimes you need to disconnect, especially when you’re surrounded by mountains that make you remember how small your daily problems really are. The 9.2 rating makes total sense once you’re there – it’s the kind of place where everything just works without trying too hard.
