Look, I’ve stayed in my fair share of places around Slovakia, and Boutique Hotel Hviezdoslav in Kežmarok honestly surprised me. Right there on Hlavné námestie, you’re basically in the heart of this medieval town – I mean, you step out the front door and you’re surrounded by those gorgeous pastel-colored burgher houses that make Kežmarok’s main square one of those spots that doesn’t quite feel real. The hotel itself sits in what’s clearly a renovated historic building, and they’ve done that tricky thing where they kept all the character but made it actually comfortable to stay in.
What really got me was how they’ve managed to feel boutique without being pretentious about it. The rooms have this understated elegance – thick walls (which, thank god, means you actually sleep well even when there’s some evening chatter from the square below), original wooden beams in some rooms, and bathrooms that feel properly modern. The staff… well, they know their stuff. When I asked about hiking routes up toward the High Tatras, the guy at reception didn’t just hand me a generic brochure – he actually sketched out which trails would be good for the weather that week and mentioned that Thursday mornings are when the local market happens right outside. That kind of local knowledge you can’t fake.
Honestly, the location is what seals it though. You’re maybe a five-minute walk from that incredible wooden church (the one that’s UNESCO-listed), and if you’re into castles – which, I mean, you’re in Slovakia, so you should be – Kežmarok Castle is literally around the corner. But here’s what most tourists don’t realize: this town is actually a perfect base for day trips. Spiš Castle is doable, the Tatras are right there for hiking, and you can even do Levoča as a day trip if you rent a car. The hotel’s concierge (and I use that term loosely – it’s more like having a knowledgeable local friend) helped me figure out train connections that saved me a ton of hassle. Parking’s not a nightmare either, which… if you’ve tried to park in Bratislava’s old town, you’ll appreciate that. The breakfast is solid – local cheeses, proper bread, none of that sad continental buffet situation. Sure, it’s not the cheapest option in town, but when you’re getting this kind of authentic experience in a place that genuinely cares about your stay, it’s worth the extra euros. Plus, with a 9 rating, they’re clearly doing something right.
