BLISS Dubova
You know what surprised me most about BLISS Dubova? It’s actually tucked right along DN 57 – which sounds like just another highway designation until you realize this is the scenic route that hugs the Danube as it carves through some of Romania’s most dramatic landscape. I mean, you’re literally staying where the river bends toward the Serbian border, and honestly, the views from certain rooms make you forget you’re at a 3-star place.
The thing about Dubova is that it’s one of those tiny Mehedinți County gems that most people only discover by accident (or because they’re doing the whole Iron Gates thing). But BLISS gets it – they’ve positioned themselves perfectly for travelers who want to explore the Danube Gorge without dealing with the crowds you’d find closer to the dam. The hotel itself has this unpretentious vibe that works really well here. Nothing fancy, but everything’s clean and thoughtfully arranged. I actually loved that they didn’t try to overdress the place – the natural setting does all the heavy lifting. Check-in was refreshingly straightforward, and the staff seemed genuinely excited to share local hiking tips rather than just going through the motions.
What really won me over was how they handle the practical stuff. Parking’s never an issue – which, trust me, matters when you’re driving those winding Danube roads and just want to collapse somewhere safe. The rooms are quieter than I expected, especially considering you’re right off the main road. I think it’s because Dubova itself is so peaceful; there’s just not much traffic once you get past the occasional tour bus heading to the archaeological sites. The 9.3 rating makes total sense when you experience it – it’s not trying to be something it’s not, but what it does, it does really well. You’ll sleep well, wake up to those river views, and feel like you’ve discovered something special without breaking the bank. Plus, you’re perfectly positioned to explore the Decebalus rock sculpture and the old Roman ruins without having to drive for hours. It’s the kind of place that makes you want to stay an extra day just to sit on the terrace and watch the Danube do its thing.
