Balvanyos Resort – Peakture Hotel & Grand Hotel Balvanyos
Look, I’ll be honest – when I first heard about Balvanyos Resort, I wasn’t sure what to expect. The name alone sounds like something out of a fantasy novel, and honestly, the area feels pretty remote when you’re driving through the winding roads of Covasna County. But you know what? Sometimes the middle of nowhere turns out to be exactly where you want to be.
The thing about this place is that it’s actually two hotels working together – the Peakture Hotel and Grand Hotel Balvanyos – which sounds confusing but works surprisingly well in practice. I mean, you get more dining options and amenities without feeling like you’re staying in some massive, impersonal resort. The check-in was smooth (they seem to have their act together despite managing two properties), and the staff actually remembered my name by day two, which doesn’t happen often at four-star places.
What really got me was the setting – you’re literally surrounded by the Carpathian Mountains, and I’m talking about the kind of views that make you stop mid-conversation. The air up there is different too, crisp in a way that makes you want to take deeper breaths. Mornings are particularly magical, especially if you’re an early riser like me. There’s this moment just after sunrise when the mist is still clinging to the valleys and you can hear absolutely nothing except maybe some birds. The parking situation is actually pretty decent (which matters when you’re driving up from Bucharest), and the roads aren’t as scary as some of the other mountain resorts I’ve been to.
The rooms themselves are solid – nothing too fancy, but they’re comfortable and clean, and honestly, when you’re looking out at mountain peaks, you’re not spending much time critiquing the décor anyway. The bathrooms are modern enough, hot water pressure is good (important after hiking), and the beds are actually comfortable. I stayed during what I guess was shoulder season, so it wasn’t packed, but I could tell this place gets busy during peak summer and winter months.
What I really appreciated was how they handle the whole spa situation – there’s natural mineral water here, which is sort of the whole point of Balvanyos historically. The locals have been coming to these springs for generations, and you can tell the hotel respects that tradition rather than just trying to commercialize it. The spa facilities feel authentic, not like some generic wellness center they dropped in. Plus, the restaurant food was way better than I expected – they actually use local ingredients and the chef seems to know what they’re doing with traditional Romanian dishes.
The 8.8 rating makes sense to me. It’s not perfect – the WiFi can be spotty (though maybe that’s a feature, not a bug), and some of the common areas could use updating. But there’s something genuine about this place that’s hard to find anymore. You’re not just staying at a hotel; you’re experiencing this unique corner of Romania that most tourists never see. If you’re looking for a place to actually disconnect and recharge, and you don’t mind being a bit off the beaten path, Balvanyos Resort delivers in ways that surprised me.
