You know what? I’ve driven past Balázs Panzió on Főút about a dozen times before I actually stayed there, and honestly, I was kicking myself for not stopping sooner. This little family-run place sits right on the main road through Corund – which sounds like it’d be noisy, but it’s actually pretty quiet since most of the traffic here is just locals heading to the pottery workshops or the occasional tourist like me discovering this gem of a Székely village.
The thing about Balázs Panzió is that it feels like staying with relatives you actually want to visit. Mrs. Balázs (I’m pretty sure that’s the owner’s wife) greeted me with this genuine warmth that you just can’t fake, and within five minutes she was telling me which ceramics workshop stays open latest and where to get the best kürtőskalács in town. The rooms are simple but spotless – I mean, hospital-clean spotless – with these traditional wooden furnishings that actually look like they belong there, not like someone ordered them from a “rustic hotel furniture” catalog. My room faced the back garden, which was perfect because you wake up to birdsong instead of the occasional tractor, and there’s this little covered terrace where I ended up having my coffee every morning while watching the mist roll off the hills.
What really sold me on this place was the breakfast situation. Now, I’m usually a grab-coffee-and-go traveler, but here they serve this incredible spread of local stuff – fresh bread, homemade jams (the plum one is ridiculous), local cheese, and these eggs that actually taste like something. The dining room has this cozy, lived-in feel with ceramic pieces from local artisans displayed on the walls, and honestly, it’s where you’ll probably end up chatting with other guests about hiking trails or which pottery studios are worth visiting. Parking is right there in front – no hassle, no fees, just pull up and you’re done. The 9.7 rating makes total sense when you experience how much they actually care about getting the details right. It’s not fancy, but it’s exactly what you want after a day of exploring the Târnava valley or hunting for traditional ceramics. I’d definitely stay here again, especially if I’m planning to spend time in the workshops – some of the potters even know the family personally and will give you better prices if you mention you’re staying at Balázs.
