Look, I’ve stayed at my fair share of spa hotels in Romania, but Bacolux Afrodita honestly surprised me in the best way possible. When you first pull up to Complexelor 2 in Băile Herculane, you might think “okay, another thermal resort” – but this place actually gets it right. The building itself has this updated elegance that doesn’t scream “communist-era renovation” like some other spots in the area, and parking was refreshingly straightforward (trust me, that matters when you’re hauling luggage after a long drive through the Cerna Valley).
What really won me over was how they’ve managed to balance that old-world spa town charm with genuinely modern comfort. The thermal facilities are the real deal – I mean, you’re literally sitting in the same mineral-rich waters that Romans used centuries ago, which is pretty wild when you think about it. The staff seemed to actually know about the different thermal pools and their specific benefits, not just the generic “good for relaxation” spiel you get elsewhere. Honestly, the water temperature consistency was spot-on, and there’s something about soaking in those pools while looking out at the surrounding Domogled-Valea Cernei mountains that just works. The spa treatments were solid too – nothing revolutionary, but executed well by people who clearly knew what they were doing.
Here’s what I really appreciated: the rooms were genuinely comfortable (not just “nice for a spa hotel”), the breakfast had both Romanian classics and international options that didn’t feel like an afterthought, and the location puts you within walking distance of the old Herculane Casino ruins – which, okay, sounds random but it’s actually a fascinating piece of history if you’re into that sort of thing. The hotel sits right in the sweet spot where you can easily explore the town center but still feel like you’re in a proper retreat setting. Summer gets pretty busy with Romanian families on vacation, but even then it never felt overcrowded. I’d definitely go back, especially during shoulder season when the rates drop and you can really enjoy those thermal pools without the crowds. For a four-star property with an 8.6 rating, it delivers exactly what you’d hope for without any unpleasant surprises.

Excellent SPA, they have all kind of pools and hot tubs, separate for children, at different temperatures, many inside and one outside, more saunas, relaxing booths and a salt room. In the evening they have entertainers and music at the restaurant. The menu was average. The chef was from Sri Lanka, so be aware, he cooks more spicier than you...

The pools and spa are brilliant. I liked that the chef was welcoming us at breakfast and dinner. All employees were helpful and very nice. The view from the rooms is amazing, you can see the mountains even if the room is on the lower floor.
