The name makes it sound like some cheesy fairy-tale themed place, but honestly, it’s just a solid, well-run spot right in the heart of Starý Smokovec. I mean, you’re literally steps from the funicular station that takes you up to Hrebienok – and if you’ve never done that ride, especially in winter when everything’s blanketed in snow, you’re missing out. The apartment sits on the main stretch where all the action happens, but somehow it doesn’t get the noise you’d expect from being so central.

The place itself feels more like staying at a friend’s mountain cabin than a typical hotel. The owner – I think her name was Mária – actually lives nearby and genuinely cares about the details. She showed me where to park (which is honestly half the battle in Smokovec during ski season) and mentioned the best times to hit the trails before the day-trippers arrive from Bratislava. The apartment’s got this cozy, lived-in quality without being cluttered – think wood accents, mountain views from the windows, and a kitchen that’s actually equipped for more than just heating up instant coffee. I made breakfast there most mornings and watched the early hikers heading toward the Tatras peaks while the village was still quiet.

What really sold me on the place was how it strikes this perfect balance between being convenient and feeling authentic. You’re a five-minute walk from the Grand Hotel’s spa facilities (they let non-guests use them for a fee), but you’re also close enough to the local pubs where the mountain guides hang out after work. The apartment’s rating of 9 out of 10 makes total sense when you factor in little things like actually hot water, decent WiFi that works even when it’s snowing, and beds that don’t creak every time you move. Plus, Mária left a bottle of slivovica – Slovak plum brandy – as a welcome gift, which I definitely wasn’t expecting from a 3-star place. The only minor downside is that the building’s a bit older, so you hear footsteps from upstairs sometimes, but it’s nothing that would keep you awake unless you’re an incredibly light sleeper.
