Look, I’ve stayed in a lot of places in the High Tatras, but Apartmány Impresia – Bernard actually gets it right. You know how some hotels try too hard to be fancy? This isn’t that – it’s just genuinely comfortable in a way that makes sense for the mountains. The moment you walk in, there’s this immediate sense that someone who actually lives here designed the place, not some corporate hospitality team from Prague.
The location in Nový Smokovec is honestly perfect if you want to be close to the action without dealing with the tourist circus of Starý Smokovec proper. I mean, you’re literally a five-minute walk from the funicular station, but you can actually sleep at night without hearing drunk hikers stumbling around at 2 AM. The apartments themselves – and they really are proper apartments, not just hotel rooms with a mini-fridge shoved in the corner – have this lived-in quality that’s rare around here. The kitchens are actually functional (I made goulash twice), the beds don’t squeak when you move, and whoever chose the furniture understood that people staying here might actually want to relax after spending eight hours on mountain trails.
What really sold me, though, was the small stuff. The check-in person – I think her name was Zuzana – knew exactly which hiking trails would be muddy after the rain we’d had, and she pointed out a back route to Hrebienok that skips the crowds entirely. The parking situation is straightforward (no hunting for spots or paying extra fees), and there’s a proper drying room for wet gear, which honestly should be standard everywhere in the Tatras but somehow isn’t. The Wi-Fi actually works throughout the building – I was taking work calls from the common area without any issues. And here’s something you don’t always get at mountain places: the water pressure is excellent, which matters more than you think when you’re washing off a day’s worth of trail dust. The whole operation just feels like it’s run by people who understand what travelers actually need, rather than what some tourism manual says they should want.
