Look, I’ve stayed in a lot of places around the High Tatras, but Apartmán Štrbské Pleso – Crocus 219 honestly surprised me. You know how sometimes you book a place and just hope it’s decent? Well, this one actually exceeded expectations. The location on Szentiványho street puts you right in the sweet spot – close enough to hear the lake lapping (Štrbské Pleso is literally right there), but far enough from the main tourist chaos that you can actually sleep in if you want to.
The apartment itself feels like someone’s well-loved mountain retreat rather than a sterile hotel room. I mean, it’s got that cozy Slovak mountain vibe without being kitschy about it. The kitchen is properly equipped – not just a mini-fridge and microwave situation – which is clutch because eating out for every meal around here gets expensive fast. The windows face toward the lake, and honestly, waking up to that view never got old during my stay. You can see the cable car station from there too, which is weirdly helpful for timing your day trips up to Lomnický štít or Skalnaté pleso. The Wi-Fi actually works (shocking, I know, for a mountain location), and the heating keeps things properly warm even when it’s properly cold outside – trust me, I was there in late October and it got chilly.
What really sets this place apart though is how it connects you to the area without isolating you from it. You’re a two-minute walk from the lake promenade where all the evening strollers gather, but you can also duck into the forest trails that start basically behind the building. The parking situation is straightforward (no hunting for spots like in some parts of the Tatras), and the check-in process was refreshingly simple. The hosts clearly know their stuff about the region – they left recommendations that weren’t just the obvious tourist spots. One thing to know: it does get busy during ski season and summer hiking months, so the lake area can feel crowded, but the apartment itself stays peaceful. The building’s solid construction means you won’t hear your neighbors, which is more than I can say for some of the newer developments around here. If you’re planning to use this as a base for exploring the High Tatras – whether that’s hiking, skiing, or just soaking in the mountain atmosphere – it’s positioned perfectly. You’re not stuck in some remote spot where you need to drive everywhere, but you’re not in the middle of a tourist circus either. It’s that sweet spot that locals know about but somehow doesn’t feel overrun yet.
