You know what really surprised me about Apartmán Sofia? The location is absolutely perfect if you’re planning to explore the High Tatras, but it doesn’t feel touristy at all. I mean, Veľký Slavkov isn’t exactly on everyone’s radar – it’s this quiet little town that most people just drive through on their way to the mountains – but that’s honestly what makes staying here so great.

The apartment itself sits on Horská street, which I guess translates to “Mountain Street” (pretty fitting, right?), and from certain windows you can actually catch glimpses of the peaks. It’s one of those family-run places where the owners clearly live nearby and actually care about the details. The check-in was refreshingly personal – none of that sterile hotel desk experience. The space feels more like borrowing a friend’s mountain retreat than staying in typical tourist accommodation. Everything’s clean and well-maintained, though it’s definitely more function over fancy, which honestly works perfectly for this kind of trip. The kitchen actually has proper cookware, not those flimsy tourist apartment pans that drive you crazy, and there’s decent space to spread out after a day of hiking.

What really sold me on this place was how it puts you right in the middle of real Slovak mountain culture without the resort prices. Veľký Slavkov has this authentic small-town vibe where locals still nod hello on the street, and you’re maybe twenty minutes from some incredible hiking trails that don’t have crowds of tour buses. The surrounding area gets pretty quiet in the evenings – you can actually hear the mountain sounds instead of traffic – but during the day there’s enough going on that you don’t feel stuck in the middle of nowhere. Parking was never an issue, which anyone who’s tried to navigate mountain towns with a car will appreciate. The apartment stays surprisingly cool even in summer (those thick European walls, I think), and in winter… well, let’s just say you’ll be plenty warm and cozy. I’d definitely come back, especially since the rating speaks for itself – a perfect 10 isn’t something you see every day, and after staying here, I totally get why.
