Apartman Mary Lou, Hotel Ovruc

Okay, so I’ll be honest – when I first pulled up to Apartman Mary Lou at Štrbské Pleso, I wasn’t sure what to expect. The name had me thinking it might be some quirky throwback place, but actually, it’s part of Hotel Ovruc and sits right in one of Slovakia’s most gorgeous mountain settings. I mean, Štrbské Pleso isn’t just another lake town – it’s this pristine glacial lake surrounded by the High Tatras, and you’re literally staying steps from all of it.

What really got me was how the place manages to feel both polished and unpretentious at the same time. The apartment setup is perfect if you’re like me and get tired of cramped hotel rooms after a couple days. You’ve got actual space to spread out, a proper kitchenette (which honestly saved me a fortune since mountain restaurants can be pricey), and windows that frame the Tatras like living postcards. The locals here are pretty straight-talking people, so when they give a place a 9 rating, they mean it – this isn’t some tourist trap inflating its numbers.

You know what I loved most though? The location puts you right in the sweet spot where you can walk to the lake in literally three minutes, but you’re not dealing with the chaos of the main tourist strip. Early mornings especially – and I’m talking like 6:30 AM – you can have that lake practically to yourself, just you and maybe a few serious hikers heading up toward Rysy peak. The cable car to Solisko is close enough that you’ll hear it running (not loud, just a gentle mechanical hum that somehow adds to the mountain atmosphere), and if you’re planning to hit any of the hiking trails, you’re already positioned perfectly. Parking was surprisingly hassle-free too, which anyone who’s driven around European mountain towns will appreciate. The whole Štrbské Pleso area gets absolutely packed during peak summer and ski season, but staying at Mary Lou means you’re not scrambling for a spot every time you want to take a day trip to Poprad or explore some of the quieter valleys nearby. Four stars feels about right – it’s got that refined comfort without trying too hard to be fancy, and sometimes that’s exactly what you want when you’re more interested in the mountains outside than the thread count inside.
