I’ll be honest – when I first pulled up to Apartmán Krajčer on Mlynská street, I wasn’t expecting much from a 3-star place. But you know what? Sometimes the best surprises come in unassuming packages, and this little gem in Gerlachov is exactly that kind of place.

The thing about staying here is that you’re not just getting a room – you’re getting dropped right into the heart of High Tatras country, where the air actually smells different (pine and that crisp mountain thing that makes you want to take deeper breaths). The Krajčer family has been running this place for years, and it shows in all the small ways that matter. Like how they’ll actually tell you which hiking trails are worth your time versus the tourist traps, or how the coffee in the morning tastes like someone who gives a damn made it. The apartments themselves are… well, they’re not going to win any design awards, but they’re genuinely comfortable in that lived-in way that makes you feel at home rather than like you’re camping in someone’s showroom. The beds are proper firm (thank god), and honestly, after a day of hiking around Skalnaté pleso or dealing with the crowds at Štrbské pleso, you’ll appreciate having a real kitchen to make your own dinner instead of hunting for restaurants.

What really gets me about this place is the location – and I don’t mean that in the generic “convenient location” way every hotel claims. I mean you’re a fifteen-minute walk from some of the best trailheads most tourists never find because they’re too busy following the crowds. The locals here will point you toward the path up to Batizovské pleso if you ask nicely, and trust me, it’s worth the slightly sketchy approach through the forest. Plus, you’re close enough to Poprad that you can actually get decent groceries and supplies, but far enough into Gerlachov that you’re not dealing with tour bus noise at 6 AM. The only real downside – and this is pretty minor – is that the Wi-Fi gets a bit spotty when the weather’s rough, but honestly, if you’re here staring at your phone instead of those mountain views, you’re doing it wrong anyway. The whole place just works in that unpretentious way that makes you want to come back, which probably explains why it’s got those surprisingly high ratings from people who’ve actually stayed here.
