You know what caught me off guard about Apartmán Hrebienok? The moment you step out onto the balcony, you’re literally staring up at the High Tatras peaks – and I mean *literally*, not in that overused Instagram way. This place sits right in the Hrebienok Resort area above Starý Smokovec, which honestly feels like you’re staying inside a postcard, except the mountain air actually makes your lungs tingle and you can hear the funicular railway chunking up the hillside every so often.
The apartment itself is pretty solid for what you’re paying – clean, modern enough without being sterile, and the kitchen actually has decent knives (travelers who cook their own meals will appreciate this small miracle). What I really loved was how quiet it gets at night; you’re high enough up that you escape most of the tourist chatter from the main Smokovec area below, but close enough that you can walk down to grab dinner or hit the grocery store without feeling like you need a sherpa. The Wi-Fi works well – I was able to video call family back home without any of those awkward frozen-face moments. Parking was straightforward too, which isn’t always guaranteed in these mountain resort areas where spaces can be… well, creatively sized.
Here’s the thing about staying up at Hrebienok though – you’re basically at the starting point for some incredible hiking trails, and in winter, you’re right there for skiing at Skalnaté Pleso. I mean, most people take the funicular up from Starý Smokovec just to get to where you’re already sleeping. The location saves you time and honestly gives you this insider feeling, like you know something other tourists don’t. Mornings are especially magical; you can sip coffee and watch the mist clear off the peaks while other visitors are still figuring out train schedules. The only minor downside is that grocery runs require a bit more planning since you’re not exactly around the corner from a supermarket, but there’s something kind of nice about that forced slowdown. The 4-star rating feels about right – it’s comfortable and well-maintained without being fancy, and that 8/10 rating makes sense because while everything works and the views are spectacular, it’s not trying to be a luxury resort. It’s just a really good base camp for exploring the Tatras, run by people who seem to understand that sometimes the best amenity is simply getting out of the way of the mountains.
