You know what? I wasn’t expecting much when I first pulled up to Apartmán D3 on Tatranská street – honestly, the address made it sound like just another generic rental. But man, was I wrong. This place sits right in the heart of Veľká Lomnica, and I mean that in the best possible way. You’re literally a stone’s throw from the main square, but somehow it doesn’t feel touristy or crowded. Actually, it’s more like staying in someone’s really well-appointed home, which I guess is exactly what it is.
The apartment itself is surprisingly spacious – I’m talking about real living space, not those cramped hotel rooms where you’re bumping into furniture every time you turn around. The kitchen actually works (shocking, I know, but you’d be amazed how many vacation rentals have those sad little kitchenettes that can barely handle making coffee). I ended up cooking a few meals there because, well, the local grocery store is right down the street, and after a day of hiking in the Tatras, sometimes you just want to stay in with some Slovak beer and whatever local cheese you managed to find. The whole place has this clean, modern feel without being sterile – you know those places that look great in photos but feel cold in person? This isn’t that.
What really sold me though was the location for getting to the mountains. Look, everyone talks about Vysoké Tatry like it’s some distant mystical place, but from D3, you’re basically at the doorstep. The cable car station is walkable – and I mean actually walkable, not “walkable if you don’t mind a 20-minute trek with your gear.” Plus, if you’re planning to hit multiple trails over a few days, you’ll appreciate coming back to a place where you can actually spread out and relax. The shower pressure is solid (crucial after those mountain hikes), and the bed is comfortable enough that you won’t wake up feeling like you wrestled with it all night. I’ll be honest, the parking situation took me a minute to figure out – it’s not immediately obvious where you’re supposed to leave your car – but once the owner explained it, no problems at all. The whole check-in process was refreshingly straightforward, none of that awkward key-passing or confusing lockbox hunting. If you’re looking for a base camp for exploring this part of Slovakia that doesn’t feel like a generic hotel experience, this is your spot.
