You know what caught me off guard about Apartman D304? I was expecting just another mountain rental, but this place actually has some serious charm tucked away in Starý Smokovec. I mean, the location alone – you’re literally in the heart of the High Tatras, and when I say heart, I’m talking about being steps away from the cogwheel railway that takes you up to Hrebienok. The apartment sits right in the old part of town where you can still see those classic Tatra architecture details, the kind with the steep roofs and wooden balconies that somehow don’t look touristy despite being photographed constantly.
The space itself is honestly better than most hotels I’ve stayed in around here. It’s got that perfect balance of feeling homey without being cluttered – you know how some vacation rentals feel like someone just dumped their grandmother’s furniture everywhere? Not this one. The kitchen actually works (I made coffee every morning and it didn’t involve a 20-minute ordeal), and the bedroom has these massive windows that frame Slavkovský štít beautifully. What I really appreciated was the heating situation – and trust me, this matters when you’re visiting in shoulder season. The radiators actually heat the place properly, unlike some spots where you’re layering sweaters indoors. There’s decent WiFi too, which sounds silly to mention but you’d be surprised how many mountain places still act like the internet is optional.
Here’s the thing about staying in Starý Smokovec versus some of the bigger resort towns – you’re getting the authentic Tatra experience without the crowds that hit places like Tatranská Lomnica. I could walk to the Bilíkova chata trail in about ten minutes, and the grocery store (well, the smaller one anyway) is close enough that you don’t need to plan every meal in advance. Parking was straightforward, which honestly surprised me because I’d heard horror stories about finding spots during peak season. The owner was pretty responsive when I had questions, and check-in was refreshingly simple – none of that “meet me at this random café at exactly 3:47 PM” nonsense. If I’m being completely honest, the only minor thing was that the shower pressure could be stronger, but honestly? After a day hiking around Skalnaté pleso, I wasn’t exactly picky. The whole experience just felt… right, I guess. Like staying at a friend’s well-appointed mountain place rather than some sterile rental unit.
