You know what struck me first about Apartmán Chrúst? It’s tucked into this residential building called Dom Família, and honestly, from the outside you might wonder if you’re in the right place. But that’s actually part of its charm – it feels more like staying at a local friend’s place than some sterile hotel. The location in Nový Smokovec is pretty clever too, because you’re literally a five-minute walk from the funicular that takes you up to Hrebienok (locals just call it “the cable car”), but you’re not dealing with the tourist crowds that swarm around the main station area.
The apartment itself is surprisingly spacious – I mean, when you see “apartmán” you sort of expect something cramped, but this place actually gives you room to spread out. The kitchen’s properly equipped, which matters if you’re planning to stay a few days and want to grab groceries from the Tesco down in Poprad rather than eating out every meal. What I really appreciated was how quiet it gets at night. You’d think being right off the main road through Smokovec would mean traffic noise, but the building’s set back enough that you mostly just hear the occasional late train heading toward Štrbské Pleso. The Wi-Fi’s solid too – worked fine for video calls, which honestly can be hit-or-miss in the mountains.
Here’s the thing about staying here versus some of the bigger hotels in Starý Smokovec – you’re getting that 4-star comfort level without the tour bus chaos. The 9-point rating makes sense when you consider what you’re paying for the location. I stayed in early October, and while some of the tourist restaurants were already closing for the season, being in Nový Smokovec meant I could still walk to that little grocery store and the few local spots that stay open year-round. Plus, and this is key if you’re planning hiking trips, you can park right there and not worry about finding a spot near the trailheads. The owners are responsive too – had a minor issue with the heating remote and they sorted it out within an hour. It’s that kind of personal attention you don’t get at the chain places. If you’re the type who wants to actually live in the High Tatras for a few days instead of just passing through, this setup works really well.
