Okay, so I’ve stayed at a bunch of places in Zakopane over the years, and Apartamenty ZakoCHata honestly surprised me in the best way. You know how sometimes a place just feels right the moment you walk in? That’s what happened here. It’s tucked right on Piłsudskiego street – which, if you know Zakopane at all, puts you basically in the sweet spot where you’re close enough to walk to Krupówki (the main pedestrian strip) but far enough away that you’re not dealing with drunk tourists stumbling around at 2 AM.
The apartment itself had this really authentic mountain feel without being all kitschy about it. I mean, sure, there’s wood everywhere – it’s Zakopane, what do you expect? – but it’s done tastefully. The kitchen actually worked, which is more than I can say for half the places I’ve rented in the Tatras. I ended up cooking quite a bit because, honestly, the local grocery stores have amazing regional stuff and it felt good to make breakfast while looking out at the mountains. The beds were proper comfortable too, not those saggy mattresses you sometimes get in mountain towns. There’s decent WiFi, though it does slow down a bit in the evenings when everyone’s streaming – but you’re in Zakopane, so maybe put the phone down and look outside?
What really sold me on this place was the location knowledge the hosts had. They left these handwritten notes (in English, thankfully) about which trails to hit early in the morning before the crowds, where to get the best oscypek that isn’t tourist-trap expensive, and – this was brilliant – exactly which bus to take to get to the cable car without the hassle. The parking situation is solid too, which if you’ve ever tried to park near Krupówki during peak season, you’ll appreciate. The whole building stays pretty quiet, even with families around, and there’s something about the way it’s positioned that blocks most of the street noise. I actually slept better here than I do at home sometimes. The rating of 9 makes total sense to me – it’s not trying to be some luxury resort, but it absolutely nails what it is: a really well-run, comfortable base for exploring the mountains that doesn’t feel like you’re staying in someone’s leftover guest room.
