Look, I’ll be honest – when I first saw the address on Orkana Street, I thought “great, another tourist trap right in the thick of things.” But you know what? Sometimes being in the center actually works in your favor, and this is one of those times. The Apartamenty Orkana Centrum sits literally a three-minute walk from Krupówki (that’s Zakopane’s main pedestrian street, in case you’re wondering), but here’s the thing – it’s tucked just far enough off the main drag that you’re not hearing drunk tourists singing Polish folk songs at 2 AM.
The apartments themselves are pretty solid for what you’re paying. I mean, it’s a 3-star place, so don’t expect marble bathrooms or anything, but the rooms are clean and actually have decent-sized kitchenettes. The beds are comfortable enough, and honestly, after a day of hiking in the Tatras, you could probably sleep on a park bench. What I really appreciated was the heating – and trust me, if you’re visiting in winter (which, let’s face it, is when Zakopane really shines), you’ll be grateful for radiators that actually work. The Wi-Fi is reliable too, which matters when you’re trying to upload all those mountain photos to make your friends jealous. Parking can be a bit of a puzzle during peak season, but there’s usually something available within a block or two – just be prepared to parallel park like you’re taking a driving test.
The location is really where this place earns its keep. You’re close enough to walk to everything that matters – the cable car up to Kasprowy Wierch is maybe a 15-minute stroll, and all the good restaurants are within stumbling distance. But here’s some local knowledge for you: skip the touristy places right on Krupówki and walk about five minutes toward the train station area. There’s this little pierogi place called Karczma that the locals actually eat at, and the prices won’t make you cry. The staff at Orkana are pretty helpful too – they speak enough English to get by, and they’re good about recommending hiking trails based on your fitness level (which, after eating Polish food for a few days, might be lower than when you arrived). The whole experience feels more like staying in someone’s well-maintained apartment building than a sterile hotel, which I actually prefer when I’m planning to be out exploring most of the day anyway.
