You know what caught me off guard about Apartament Sofia? The moment I walked up to Topolowa 1/5, I realized this wasn’t your typical cramped mountain accommodation. I mean, Kowary isn’t exactly a household name unless you’re into the Karkonosze region, but this place sits in one of those quiet residential streets where you can actually hear yourself think – which is saying something when you’re used to the hustle of bigger Polish cities.

The apartment itself feels like someone’s grandmother actually lived there and cared about the details. There’s this warmth to the place that you don’t get in cookie-cutter hotels, honestly. The rooms have that perfect balance where everything works (and I mean everything – the shower pressure alone made my day), but it doesn’t feel sterile or impersonal. What really struck me was how thoughtfully everything was arranged. You’ve got proper kitchen space if you want to grab groceries from the local Żabka, but you’re also walking distance to some surprisingly decent restaurants. The bed situation is solid too – none of that thin mattress nonsense you sometimes get in mountain towns.

Here’s the thing about Kowary that most people don’t realize until they’re there: it’s perfectly positioned for day trips without being in the middle of tourist chaos. You can hit the trails in Karkonosze National Park without fighting crowds, and if you want to venture to Karpacz or even cross into Czech Republic, you’re talking maybe 20-30 minutes by car. Parking right outside the building is actually manageable (trust me, this matters more than you think in these old Polish towns). The neighborhood feels safe enough that I was comfortable walking around after dark, which – let’s be honest – isn’t always a given in unfamiliar places. Plus, there’s something refreshing about staying somewhere locals actually live instead of being stuck in a tourist bubble. The morning sounds are just birds and the occasional neighbor heading to work, not tour buses rumbling past your window at 7 AM.
