You know what? I wasn’t expecting much when I first rolled up to Apartament Salamandra on Grabskiego Street – honestly, the name made me think it’d be some quirky themed place with lizard decor everywhere. But this little gem in Kowary completely caught me off guard, and I mean that in the best way possible.
The thing about Kowary is that it’s one of those Polish towns that feels authentically lived-in, not touristy at all, tucked right up against the Sudeten Mountains. Grabskiego Street itself is pretty quiet – you’re not dealing with traffic noise or late-night party crowds, which I actually loved after staying in some of the busier spots in Wrocław. The apartment sits in this perfectly normal residential area where you’ll see locals walking their dogs and kids riding bikes, but you’re still close enough to the mountain trails that you can literally see the Karkonosze peaks from some of the windows. I spent way too much time just staring out at those views with my morning coffee.
What really impressed me about Salamandra – and this is coming from someone who’s stayed in plenty of European apartments that promise more than they deliver – is how thoughtfully everything’s set up. The space feels like someone actually lives there and cares about the details, not like a sterile rental property. The kitchen had proper knives (you travelers know what I’m talking about), the shower pressure was honestly better than my apartment back home, and there were these little touches like good hangers in the closet and decent lighting for reading. The WiFi worked perfectly too, which mattered since I was trying to get some work done between hikes. Check-in was smooth – no awkward key exchanges or confusing instructions, just straightforward communication that made everything easy. And here’s the thing about that 9.9 rating: it’s not just inflated reviews from friends and family. The place genuinely runs like clockwork, and after a few days there, I could see why previous guests were so enthusiastic. The value is incredible too – I mean, for what you’d pay for a basic hotel room in Krakow, you get this entire well-appointed apartment with mountain access practically at your doorstep. If you’re planning to explore the Sudeten region or just want a peaceful base that feels more like staying with a friend than at a hotel, Salamandra delivers without any of the pretense.
