You know what struck me first about Apartament Owcze Runo? The name itself – “Sheep’s Fleece” in Polish – which honestly makes perfect sense once you’re settled in because everything about this place feels warm and cozy, like being wrapped up in something soft after a day of hiking in the Tatras. It’s right on Orkana Street, and I mean literally a few minutes’ walk from the main buzz of Krupówki, but far enough that you’re not dealing with the tourist chaos at all hours.
The apartment itself is pretty spacious for Zakopane standards – you know how cramped some of these mountain places can get, especially during ski season. What I really appreciated was how thoughtfully everything was set up. The kitchen actually has proper cookware (not those flimsy tourist apartment pots), which came in handy since we grabbed some local oscypek cheese and bread from the market nearby. The whole place has this authentic highland feel without being overdone – you’ve got traditional wooden elements but it doesn’t feel like you’re staying in a museum, if that makes sense. The beds are honestly really comfortable too, which… well, after trudging up to Morskie Oko or spending a day on the slopes, that matters more than you’d think.
Location-wise, you’re in this sweet spot where locals actually live and work. There’s a little grocery store practically next door, and honestly, the walk to the cable car stations is totally doable – maybe 10-15 minutes to the Gubałówka funicular. Parking can be a bit tricky during peak times (aren’t we all familiar with that Zakopane struggle?), but there’s usually something available on the side streets if you’re patient. The owners were super responsive when we had a question about the heating – which, by the way, works really well even when it’s properly freezing outside. One small thing though: the walls are a bit thin, so you might hear your neighbors if they’re being loud, but that’s pretty standard for these older buildings in the area. What really won me over was how clean everything was and those little touches – decent Wi-Fi, proper towels, even some local tourist info left out. It’s got that 9/10 rating for a reason, and after staying in my fair share of Zakopane accommodations over the years, I can see why people keep coming back to this one.
