Honestly, when I first walked up to Apartament Onyks on Mariana Zająca street, I wasn’t expecting much – I mean, it’s tucked away in this quiet residential area that most tourists completely miss. But you know what? That turned out to be exactly what made it special. You’re literally a ten-minute walk from all the Krupówki madness (that’s Zakopane’s main tourist strip, for those who don’t know), but when you close your apartment door at night, it actually gets quiet. Like, properly quiet – no drunk tourists stumbling around at 2 AM singing Polish folk songs.
The apartment itself is pretty straightforward, nothing fancy, but everything works and it’s genuinely clean. The kitchen has everything you actually need if you want to cook – which I’d recommend, because grocery shopping at the little Żabka down the street and making your own breakfast feels way more authentic than hitting another overpriced mountain café. The bathroom’s small but functional, and honestly, after spending your days hiking in the Tatras, you’re just grateful for hot water that doesn’t run out after five minutes. What really got me was the attention to small details – good Wi-Fi (crucial when you’re trying to upload those summit photos), decent hangers in the closet, and windows that actually block out light when you want to sleep in after a long day on the trails. The location is sort of perfect if you think about it. You’re close enough to walk to the Gubałówka funicular when your legs are too tired for another hike, but far enough from the main drag that you can pretend you’re living like a local for a few days. Plus, there’s this little bakery about three blocks away that opens ridiculously early – perfect for grabbing fresh bread before heading out to Morskie Oko or wherever you’re planning to torture your calves that day.
I stayed here during shoulder season in late September, and while Zakopane was definitely quieter than summer chaos, the apartment felt cozy rather than lonely. The hosts were pretty responsive when I had questions about the best bus routes to the national park, and check-in was refreshingly simple – none of that awkward small talk while you’re just trying to drop your backpack and find the nearest pierogi. Look, this isn’t the kind of place that’s going to blow your mind with luxury amenities or Instagram-worthy design, but it’s exactly what you want when you’re using Zakopane as your base for exploring the mountains. You get a real apartment in a real neighborhood, you save money for the important stuff (like that cable car ride up Kasprowy Wierch), and you actually get some peace and quiet to recover between adventures. Sometimes that’s worth way more than marble bathrooms and complimentary champagne.
