But honestly, Apartament Lucas turned out to be one of those hidden gems that makes you feel like you’re staying at a local friend’s place rather than some sterile hotel room.

The thing about Brad is that it’s not on most tourists’ radar, which actually works in your favor here. It’s this old mining town tucked into the Hunedoara mountains, and Lucas has clearly put thought into making his place feel welcoming for the handful of travelers who do make it this way. The apartment itself is on the fourth floor – there’s an elevator, thank god, because Romanian apartment buildings can be a workout – and once you’re inside, it’s surprisingly spacious and well-kept. The host actually lives in the building, so check-in was smooth, none of that awkward key-hunting you sometimes get with vacation rentals. What really struck me was how quiet it gets at night; you’re in a residential area where locals actually live, so after about 10 PM it’s just peaceful. The kitchen’s properly stocked too, which matters if you’re like me and prefer making coffee your own way in the morning.

Here’s the thing about staying in Brad – you’re about 20 minutes from some seriously underrated hiking in the Retezat foothills, and honestly, having a proper base like this makes all the difference. Lucas knows the area well and actually gave me better directions to the Colțul Trascăului trail than anything I found online. The apartment’s got that solid 3-star comfort level without trying to be something it’s not, and I mean that as a compliment. Good WiFi, hot water that actually stays hot, and windows that open wide enough to get that mountain air flowing through. The 9.8 rating makes total sense when you consider it’s doing exactly what it promises – giving you a clean, comfortable place to crash in a town where decent accommodation options are pretty limited. If you’re road-tripping through Hunedoara county or using Brad as a jumping-off point for the mountains, this place just works. It’s not going to wow you with luxury, but it’ll take care of you properly, and sometimes that’s exactly what you need.
