You know what struck me first about Apartament Irys? It’s tucked away on Orkana Street in this residential building that honestly doesn’t look like much from the outside – I actually walked past it twice before finding the right entrance. But here’s the thing about Zakopane: sometimes the best spots are hiding in plain sight, and this little apartment on the fourth floor is exactly that kind of gem.
The location is actually pretty brilliant once you figure out the neighborhood. You’re close enough to the main Krupówki pedestrian street to walk there in about ten minutes, but far enough away that you won’t hear the late-night revelry from all the tourist bars. I mean, Zakopane gets pretty rowdy during peak season – especially weekends when everyone’s coming down from the mountains looking for oscypek and beer. But on Orkana, it’s surprisingly quiet. The building itself has that typical Polish residential feel, nothing fancy, but the apartment inside is well-maintained and surprisingly spacious for what you’d expect in this price range.
What really impressed me was how thoughtfully it’s set up for actual travelers, not just people passing through. The kitchen has everything you’d actually need if you want to cook some of those amazing regional ingredients from the local markets (and honestly, the pierogi situation at Zakopane’s grocery stores is incredible). The Wi-Fi worked perfectly – which, let me tell you, isn’t always a given in mountain towns. And the hosts clearly understand that people come here to explore, not just sleep. There’s good storage for hiking gear, and the bathroom setup works well when you’re dealing with muddy boots and wet weather gear after a day on the trails.
I stayed here during shoulder season in early October, and it was ideal for my needs. Close enough to catch the early morning buses up to Kasprowy Wierch or over to the Tatra trails, but also easy to get to some of the quieter spots that locals actually go to. You know that little area near the old cemetery where the real góral families still live? It’s basically around the corner. The building has decent insulation too – important when those mountain temperatures start dropping and you can hear the wind picking up in the peaks.
The 9-star rating honestly makes sense when you consider what you’re getting for the price point. It’s not luxury, but it’s exactly what you want in Zakopane: clean, functional, authentically local, and positioned so you can actually experience the place rather than just the tourist bubble. Plus, parking in this town can be absolutely brutal during high season, but the building situation here is manageable – just ask the hosts about it ahead of time because street parking follows some unwritten local rules that took me a day to figure out.
