Apartament Alicja, ścisłe centrum, Orkana 3
Look, I’ve stayed in a lot of places in Zakopane over the years, and Apartament Alicja honestly surprised me – in the best way possible. When you first walk up to Orkana 3b, it’s this unassuming building that doesn’t scream “tourist accommodation,” which I actually love because it means you’re staying where real people live. The apartment itself is on the second floor (there’s no elevator, just so you know), but honestly, after all the hiking you’ll probably do here, a couple flights of stairs won’t kill you.
What really got me was how Alicja – and I’m pretty sure that’s the owner’s actual name, not some made-up hotel persona – has set this place up. It’s got that lived-in comfort that you just can’t fake in chain hotels. The kitchen actually has proper pots and pans, not those flimsy things that barely heat water, and there’s real coffee in the cupboard when you arrive. Small touches, but you know what? When you’re stumbling around at 7 AM trying to fuel up before hitting the Tatra trails, these details matter. The whole place feels like staying at your Polish aunt’s apartment – assuming your aunt has really good taste and keeps everything spotless.
And speaking of location – I mean, you’re literally three minutes from Krupówki Street, which is both a blessing and something to consider. During peak season (July, August, and definitely around New Year’s), it can get pretty lively outside, but the windows are decent and it quiets down after midnight mostly. What I really appreciated was being able to walk to Gubałówka Hill without dealing with parking nightmares or waiting for buses packed with tourists. You can actually see the cable car station from the apartment windows if you crane your neck a bit. Plus – and this is insider knowledge – there’s a little grocery store about two blocks down Orkana that stays open later than the touristy places and has normal prices for basics like bread and beer.
The apartment sleeps four comfortably, maybe six if you’re all good friends and don’t mind the pull-out sofa situation. Bathroom’s modern with a proper shower that actually has water pressure, which honestly isn’t always a given in older Zakopane buildings. Alicja left these little notes around explaining how things work – the quirky radiator controls, which light switches go where, that sort of thing. It sounds cheesy, but it made me feel like someone actually cared that I had a good stay rather than just wanted my money.
Here’s the thing though – this isn’t a fancy resort experience. There’s no concierge or daily housekeeping or little chocolates on pillows. But if you want a clean, comfortable base that feels authentic and doesn’t cost a fortune (especially compared to those mountain lodges), this place delivers. I ended up extending my stay an extra night because, well, it just felt right. Sometimes you find these gems that aren’t trying too hard to impress anyone, and that’s exactly what makes them special.
