I’ll be honest—when I first walked up to Althof Apartments on Strada Avram Iancu, I wasn’t sure what to expect. The building sits right in the heart of Sibiu’s Old Town, and you know how these historic conversions can go either way. But stepping inside? Actually pretty impressive. The place has this understated elegance that works really well, especially considering it’s technically a 3-star property. The apartments feel more like staying in a well-designed city flat than a typical hotel room, which I mean, that’s exactly what you want when you’re spending more than a couple nights somewhere.
What really got me was the location—and I don’t just mean being in the Old Town (though that’s obviously great). You’re literally a two-minute walk from the Brukenthal Palace and maybe five minutes from the iconic Council Tower. But here’s the thing locals know: Strada Avram Iancu is just off the main tourist drag, so you get all the medieval charm without the constant crowds walking past your windows. I stayed there during the summer festival season, and while the main squares were packed until late, our street stayed relatively quiet. The apartments themselves are well-insulated too, which honestly surprised me given the age of the building.
The setup is pretty smart—each unit has a proper kitchenette, and there’s a little grocery store about a block away where you can grab basics. The woman who manages the place (I think her name was Ana?) was incredibly helpful with restaurant recommendations, and she actually steered me away from some of the tourist traps on Piața Mare. That kind of local insight is worth its weight in gold when you’re trying to eat well without breaking the bank. The WiFi is solid, the beds are comfortable, and the bathrooms are modern without feeling completely out of place in a historic building. My only minor complaint would be that the elevator is pretty tiny—if you’re traveling with large suitcases, just be prepared for a bit of Tetris action. But honestly, for the price point and that 9.5 rating (which I totally get now), it’s hard to find much fault. If you’re planning to explore Sibiu properly and want a base that feels like home rather than just a place to crash, this is definitely worth considering.
