You know what struck me first about Alex Apartmán? It’s tucked away on Partizánska street in this quiet corner of Spišská Nová Ves, and honestly, the location is kind of perfect if you’re planning to explore Slovak Paradise National Park. I mean, you’re literally staying in the gateway town – none of that hour-long drive from some random hotel in a bigger city. The building itself has that clean, modern apartment feel without being sterile, and parking was actually straightforward (which, let me tell you, isn’t always a given in these smaller Slovak towns).
What really won me over was how the place manages to feel both professional and personal at the same time. The apartments are properly spacious – not those cramped European “studios” where you’re bumping into furniture every five minutes. You get a real kitchen, which is clutch if you want to grab groceries from the local Tesco and save some money instead of eating out every meal. The owner clearly knows what travelers need because there were all these little touches I didn’t expect – decent WiFi that actually works, proper blackout curtains, and the heating system doesn’t sound like a dying elephant at 3 AM. I stayed there during shoulder season in late September, and while the town gets pretty quiet after tourist season winds down, that just meant I had easy access to trails without the summer crowds.
Here’s the thing though – this isn’t some fancy resort with a spa and room service. It’s more like staying in a really well-appointed apartment that happens to be run like a hotel. The check-in was smooth, everything was spotless, and you’re a five-minute walk from decent restaurants and that little square in the old town center. If you’re using this as a base for hiking (which, honestly, why else would you be in Spišská Nová Ves?), it’s pretty ideal. You can actually hear the Hornád River from some of the rooms, which is either peaceful or slightly annoying depending on how you feel about constant water sounds. The 9/10 rating makes sense to me – it delivers exactly what it promises without any pretense, the price point is reasonable for what you get, and the location saves you tons of driving time if you’re hitting the gorges and waterfalls. Just don’t expect a concierge or fancy lobby – this is more about having a comfortable, clean base camp that lets you focus on why you came to this part of Slovakia in the first place.
