It’s one of those places where you realize the 8.3 rating isn’t just generous booking site inflation – people genuinely like staying here, and after spending a few nights, I totally get why.

The thing about Romanian agropensiuni is they’re hit or miss, but Izana nails that sweet spot between rustic charm and actual comfort. I mean, sure, it’s a 3-star place so don’t expect marble bathrooms or 24-hour room service, but the owners clearly put thought into the details that matter. The rooms are clean (like, properly clean – I’m talking about checking behind the curtains clean), the beds are surprisingly comfortable, and there’s this genuine warmth to the whole setup that you just can’t fake. Plus, the location is pretty perfect if you’re exploring this part of Gorj County – you’re close enough to Târgu Jiu if you need city amenities, but far enough out that you actually feel like you’re experiencing rural Romania, not just driving through it.

What really won me over was the breakfast situation – they do this spread of local stuff that changes based on what’s actually in season, and the coffee is way better than it has any right to be at a countryside guesthouse. The family running the place (and yes, it’s definitely family-run, you’ll figure that out within five minutes) knows everyone in the area, so if you’re looking for hiking trails or want to visit some of the smaller monasteries that don’t make it into guidebooks, just ask. They also have this practical approach to hosting that I appreciated – parking is right there and easy, check-in doesn’t involve a complicated song and dance, and they’re honest about things like WiFi strength (decent in common areas, a bit spotty in some rooms). The evenings get properly quiet here, which is either a huge plus or something to consider depending on what you’re after. I actually found myself sitting outside just listening to the countryside sounds – something I never thought I’d be into, but there you go.
