Acasa in Maramures

You know what? I wasn’t expecting much when I first pulled up to Acasa in Maramures – it’s basically right on the main road through Fereşti, and honestly, the village itself is pretty tiny. But this place completely surprised me. The moment you walk in, you realize someone actually cared about creating something special here, not just another generic guesthouse.

The thing about staying in Maramures is that you’re really getting into the heart of traditional Romania – I mean, this is where you’ll still see horse-drawn carts sharing the road with cars, and the wooden churches here are UNESCO sites for good reason. Acasa sits perfectly in this world without trying too hard to be quaint or touristy. The rooms have this warm, lived-in feeling with proper wooden furniture (not the fake stuff you get in chain hotels), and the beds are actually comfortable – which, let’s be honest, isn’t always a given in rural Romania. What really got me was how quiet it gets at night. Sure, you might hear the occasional car on Principala street, but mostly it’s just… peaceful. That deep countryside quiet you forget exists until you experience it again.

The owners clearly know their stuff about hospitality – they’ll sit down and actually map out day trips for you, pointing out villages most tourists never hear about. There’s this whole network of wooden churches within driving distance, and they know which ones are worth the detour versus which ones you can skip if you’re pressed for time. Plus, they understand that if you’re staying here, you probably want to experience real Maramures life, not some sanitized version of it. The breakfast features local ingredients (the cheese alone is worth getting up for), and they can arrange visits to working farms or traditional craft workshops if that’s your thing. I stayed here during shoulder season in late spring, and the value was incredible – I mean, a 9.8 rating for a 3-star place tells you everything about how much effort goes into the guest experience. The parking is easy, check-in was smooth, and honestly, it just feels like staying with knowledgeable friends who happen to live in one of Romania’s most authentic regions.
